El peor enemigo de nuestro conocimiento vive dentro de nosotros — y no lo vemos. The worst enemy of our knowledge lives inside us — and we don't see it.
No solo ignoramos cosas. Ignoramos que las ignoramos — y a eso lo llamamos lucidez. We don't only ignore things. We ignore that we ignore them — and we call that lucidity.

Tras recorrer las condiciones del conocer, Morin enfrenta sus límites: incertidumbres, carencias, agujeros negros. Lo más grave no es la ignorancia confesa, sino «las mutilaciones del pensamiento que no se perciben como tales, sino, por el contrario, como elucidaciones». El gran agujero negro es la self-deception, el auto-engaño: «el peor enemigo de nuestro conocimiento está en nosotros mismos». After surveying the conditions of knowing, Morin faces its limits: uncertainties, deficiencies, black holes. The gravest isn't confessed ignorance, but "the mutilations of thought that aren't perceived as such, but, on the contrary, as insights". The great black hole is self-deception: "the worst enemy of our knowledge is within ourselves".
Y un segundo agujero negro: la posesión — no un fenómeno marginal, sino «el fenómeno normal de la creencia»: una «cámara» de nuestro espíritu habitada por una potencia (doctrina, ideología, dios) a la que damos fe y obediencia. And a second black hole: possession — not a marginal phenomenon, but "the normal phenomenon of belief": a "chamber" of our mind inhabited by a power (doctrine, ideology, god) to which we give faith and obedience. Self-deception and possession feed each other, and parasitize all knowledge, "ours included".

Every theory rests on indemonstrable postulates; observation can contradict reason; there are always wagers. Knowledge, says Morin, "can never eliminate the problem of uncertainty" — it could only do so by abolishing the separation between knower and known, that is, by abolishing itself.

And they cover for each other: every possession favors self-deception, and every self-deception favors possession.
La incertidumbre como fermentoUncertainty as ferment
Y sin embargo no es solo enfermedad: «la incertidumbre es a la vez el cáncer y el fermento del conocimiento». Ignorarla conduce al error; conocerla conduce a la estrategia. Es lo que empuja a investigar, verificar, reflexionar. El veneno, bien usado, es el desintoxicante. And yet it isn't only disease: "uncertainty is at once the cancer and the ferment of knowledge". Ignoring it leads to error; knowing it leads to strategy. It's what drives us to investigate, verify, reflect. The poison, well used, is the antidote.

You convince yourself of a noble motive for something you did out of fear or interest — and you truly believe it. It's not lying to others: it's lying to yourself without noticing. "No one hides me from myself but myself", writes Morin.

No es simple ignoranciaIt isn't simple ignorance
La ignorancia confesa es inofensiva: sabes que no sabes. La ceguera peligrosa es la que se cree visión — la que toma su mutilación por claridad. Ese es el verdadero problema. Confessed ignorance is harmless: you know you don't know. The dangerous blindness is the one that takes itself for sight — that mistakes its mutilation for clarity. That's the real problem.

Self-deception y posesión son, para Morin, dos «agujeros negros» que se cubren entre sí y «parasitan cualquier búsqueda de verdad, incluida la nuestra, evidentemente». Por eso el conocimiento del conocimiento no es lujo filosófico: es defensa vital. Self-deception and possession are, for Morin, two "black holes" that cover for each other and "parasitize any search for truth, ours included, obviously". This is why the knowledge of knowledge is no philosophical luxury: it's a vital defense.
Donde se vuelve incómodoWhere it becomes uncomfortable
Si el enemigo está dentro y no lo vemos, ¿no es desesperante? Morin dice que no. «La incertidumbre es a la vez el cáncer, el fermento y el motor del conocimiento.» No hay un método-receta a la manera cartesiana; hay un método auxiliar: «piensa por ti mismo y el método te ayudará». If the enemy is within and we can't see it, isn't it hopeless? Morin says no. "Uncertainty is at once the cancer, the ferment and the engine of knowledge." There's no recipe-method à la Descartes; there's an auxiliary one: "think for yourself and the method will help you". And so the loop of the first capsule closes: this is why we need a knowledge of knowledge — not to reach certainty, but to keep from being devoured by our own blindnesses.
